Stopped by there this past Saturday night for a medium Hawaiian Pizza...without a doubt, the worst pizza I have ever had in my life. If I could award negative stars, I would. Crust was hard as a rock...felt like I could break my teeth on it. Cheese, cheap diced ham and pineapple was all cold on top and not cooked. Sauce was slimy. Terrible. Even bad pizza is usually good...but this was beyond terrible. I used to pay $1.10 for a school lunch that included pizza way better than this. Never again. Eaters beware.

marios: Ok first time I went there, got a veggie medium pizza, HORRIBLE, then i got the Pepperoni the next time, I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER COME BACK, pizza is like the pizza from public schools. However, I gave it one last chance and got the Steak and Cheese, IT WAS THE BEST I EVER ATE. I normally dont like steak and cheese but this was def. the best i ever tried. Don't go there for the pizza as it is overated, but def. the steak and cheese is sooo good.

Hands down the best Steak and Cheese sub I have ever eaten. The pizza is so so but subs are out of this world. I don't get to Arlington very often but when I do it is one stop that I will not miss. I have been going there since 1962. As a kid a date was movie, Haynes point for sub boat races and Mario's Pizza House for a sub and a coke. Life was good. I miss it living on the Left Coast.

May be good... but watch delivery fees and taxes: This is supposed to be one of the best pizza places in town, so I decided to try it. I ordered 1 large pepperoni pie, nothing else for $12.98. But the total came to $20.50! That's because they add a $4 delivery fee (how much does the driver get?) and $3.00 in taxes (that's more than 20% if I'm doing my math right) In New York, where they have real pizza, that would get you two large pies delivered, no games. Needless to say, I canceled the order. I'll get my pizza somewhere else.

Are you kidding?: This place is a sty, and its pizza is not that good. It's better than the big chains, but it's nothing like, say, Ledo or the Italian Store.

Good at 2:00 am: ...if you are tanked up and hungry, any other time of the day it's a disgusting place

pizza is marginal at best: Their pizza is marginal at best, after a couple slices you really get tired of it, the only thing they really have going well for them is that they're one of the only places that isn't a fast food chain open after midnight. I've heard their subs are good, but they're a decent drive for me, so i don't go there too often.

If you don't like Mario's, you have issues: Best sub there is. Get the steak and cheese from Lefty during the day or get it from George at night. Both are different and both are amazing.

Phenomonal!: I travelled all the way from Wales, UK to get another Mario's steak and cheese sub, with everything and it totally rocked my boat!

Get there as often as I am able.: I've been going to Mario's since the 1950's! A couple of the employees have been there for 40 years. Pizza is delicious...different than modern day chain outlets. Subs are unique...the Lefty's Special (steak and cheese) is an institutuion. Its not, and never has been, a fancy place but you'll likely return once you've been there.

Can't wait to go back: Used to go while I was living in VA. a few years ago and I miss it so much too bad they do not have a web site for you to see the unique place. And the food is just great the Steak and Chesse is jut the best! Go and try it.

Really just awful pizza!: I used to live New Haven, CT, where (American) pizza was invented at Sally's Pizza, along with the frisbee. I was really looking forward to this pie (based on earlier reviews), but I have to tell you it was the most disappointing, if not the worst, pizza I've ever had. Perhaps, the subs are better. Anyway, this is warning to pizza lovers from New England to New York, the real home the pizza pie!

rude. horrible service. They lie and over charge. NOT to mention it's a disgusting place to walk into. In all, one of the worst if not the WORST place I've EVER ordered fooD. I'd rather be hungry. And if there was a rating less than awful I would be more than willing to assign it.

ODE TO LEFTY: The sparks fly from his spatula like a sword in battle, He's master, he's king, he's awesome at steak sub making! I drive miles and miles, to see him at his art, from Maryland to Virginia its my humble small part. Thanks Lefty!

Super Food! Great Experience!: I had a super dining experience! Before the 70?s if a young brother wanted to impress his girlfriend with an odour slightly more pleasing than a Neanderthal?s crotch after they?d been chased for an hour by a Woolly Mammoth, they were faced with the bewildering choice of ?Old Spice? or, errhh! ?Old Spice?. But a 70?s youth was faced with an amazing array of fragrances lead by the Market leader ?Brut 33? and closely followed by ?Hai Karate?. But whereas the mighty Brut had an advertising campaign starring such Superstars of the day as Henry ?Hammer? Cooper, Kevin ?Bubble-Perm? Keegan and John ?Piss-Head? Conteh, the Hai Karate adverts had a plot line which made the average ?Carry On? film look like a slightly more than complex ?Shawshank Redemption?flick! Basically the ads started off with a Nerdy looking bespectacled Geek liberally dousing himself with Hai Karate and then going for a walk, or in later ads, going to the Hospital or somewhere else equally mundane. It was then that fantasy kicked in! Geek Head always managed to bump into the same voluptuous, busty Brunette who, overwhelmed by the amazing potency of Hai Karate, turned from a respectable passer-by into a sex-craved Nymphomaniac. Our Geek hero would then proceed to attempt to fight her off with a series of pathetic Martial Art manoeuvres before finally succumbing to her insatiable fragrance fuelled sexual frenzy. It's a lot less complicated today!

the best: They make the best homemade style pizza in the area. Just go with the flow and you will be just fine. Steak sandwiches are fantastic as well.

Lefty (subs) & Joe (pizza) are the BEST! You have to go there to experience the place, not rely on an expensive delivery service! I used to sneak out of the nearby Wash-Lee high school for a Marios snack in the 60's. Was also great after coming home from a night of drinking in Georgetown (back then DC served alcohol to "18 yr olds"). One of my fondest memories was standing in line out the door @ 2 am, right behind "Little Jesus" (head of the Pagins motorcycle gang). He looked @ my coat & tie & "quacked like a duck"@ me!!! When I got married in '69, we honeymooned next door @ the Highlander, just to scarf down some subs the next day! We almost bought a franchise when the son of the owner was selling them in the '80's; the new stores could not compete against the historical grease (@ talents of Joe & Lefty) of the origional one, & closed within a couple of years! We all are older now, with various health issues, yet I still head for Marios "to get my fix". Lefty no longer takes 6 sub orders @ once, yet he is still trying to get me to upgrade my sausage sub with xtra-cost cheese, & Joe now has help w/ the pizzas. The third generation of my family is now going there, took my 8-yr-old grandson there @ xmas!

It's not fancy but Lefty makes one mean steak and cheese. And I love the pizza's Joe makes! Again, the best Steak&Cheese in the DMV.

By far the best pizza I've found here in Northern VA. I love their sausage subs too. There's nothing better than freshly made sausage! It may seem slow, but thats what you get when you want something made to order.

THIS IS TERRIBLE: False advertising, bad pizza, I can't say enough about how bad this place is. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!! I spoke with someone during delivery who claimed that delivery was over, though the advertising said that it was still available. I am SEVERLY dissappointed. Spend your good money elsewhere.

Once again a horrible place. I had the pizza and their other food. It was so greasy and nasty. I got sick off the food. I do not recommend going there. It was slow service and just plain gross.

Sweet At Home Style: I loved the pizza that they have and the subs are amazing too, plus the seating outside is relly nice in the summertime, the carvel icecream next to it dosent hurt.

Too many questions: Why do I have to give you so much information to deliver a pizza - first name, last name, phone number....Just wanted a pizza delivered not twenty questions. Might be good pizza, but I doubt it is that good and I will never know.

Service and Food at Mario's: The service is quite possibly the worst I've ever experienced. The staff is clearly disinterested and unhelpful. The system for ordering -- one line for subs and another line for pizza -- is ill conceived requiring customers who want pizza AND subs to stand in two lines. Both lines converge on a single register. That said the food is wonderful. I wonder how much business is lost based upon the extremely poor service and restaurant setup, however.

It is OK.....good for late night: This is one of my carry-outs that I sometimes like to go to late at night, when I am craving a Steak and Cheese sub....lol And their french fries aren't that bad either. They are one of the places that are open til like 4:am. Pretty good service.

Reviews here seem to gather at the extremes - you either love it or hate it, not much in between. If you are looking for cafe tables, with table cloths, crystal, Perrier and Chablis - this ain't it. If you want good honest, made on the spot homemade pizza with their signature sauce and real mozzarella on a crisp, not soggy crust - c'mon in. Much of it is take out, but last time I was there they still had a few picnic tables with umbrellas suitable for a very casual date. I started going to Mario's when I played on the little league baseball team they sponsored in 1960-61. That was when the motel was their putt putt golf course. Later the real estate got too pricey for that use, much to the dismay us kids, but time marches on. Lefty and Joe kept the place running and many memories were made there. Fine dining is a passion in my life but I must say this is the ONLY pizza place where I can order a plain (cheese) slice and be happy. No need to mask the simple goodness. Regrettably I live in Jacksonville now, but there is not a trip up North that I don't make a detour to Mario's for a few slices and a Special sub for later.

An Arlington Landmark: I have been eating at Marios for all my life. They offer the classic old-style square slices of pizza make the good old way. The subs are great too. Great place to go for everthing from a quick lunch to a late night snack after the bars close down.

Things haven't changed much there since the '60's: Except for the Ice Cream store they added a couple years ago, Mario's is like it was in the '60's when we'd go for Steak n' Cheese after the football game on Friday night. The food hasn't changed cause Lefty's still cooking it! Not romantic dining and there's no wine bar, but if you want good pizza and subs, Mario's has been the place to go for 40 years! Dance, if you must!

Still the greatest sub in Viginia. Have been going there since 1965 while at Washington -Lee High School. Went there today and "Lefty" was still behind the counter making my favorite sandwich just like he was in 1964. Absolutely incredible!!! Lefty should be honored by the Virginia General Assembly as a historical institution. Obama should not make a big deal about going to "Ben's Chilly: in D.C. and go see a real legend: Lefty at Marios

Some of the worst pizza I have ever had. The crust tastes like a dried out loaf of bread that has been left sitting out under a heat lamp for days or something. It really is that bad. The cheese is not much better and is not cooked enough to even melt. Even the cheapest of frozen pizzas at the grocery store taste better than this. To make matters worse, delivery is through Dr. Delivery, which is ridiculously expensive. By the time you pay their delivery fee, plus the "convenience fee", plus the gas surcharge they currently have, the delivery charge alone is almost $10. Add in a tip for the driver, and the delivery costs as much as the pizza itself. Pass on this one. There are much better pizza places around here.

Been going since I was a kid in the 70's my father started me going there before that. I now live in Florida but when I'm in town I go and see Lefty and get my subs (Ham Steak and cheese) Which is better than anything I have in Florida (Tampa). And not sure why they have been getting neg reviews on the pizza as its better than any thing in that area or here. Was just there for Rolling Thunder (2010) and I made my stop there and got my sub from Lefty so he is still there and making great subs. Wish they would move to the Tampa area and show these people how to do it.

You will occasionally meet residents of the DC metro area who harbor a strange fondness for Mario's. Upon questioning it will be explained that these Mario's enthusiasts like to hit up the place at the end of a night of drinking. That right there tells you the one and only thing Mario's has going for it: they are open very late. If you are trashed from drinking all night you might enjoy this pizza. However I expect that any vaguely sober person would not like it. To be frank this is the worst pizza I have ever had. Mario's pizza is terrible. It is worse than high school cafeteria pizza. Worse that the cheapest frozen pizza at the grocery store. It is truly awful. Now on top of this they charge $4.99 + a 15%

We ordered a pizza there last night and I must agree with below review...something has changed. Crust thick and dry and not very much flavor. Recommend they take a few steps back and reevaluate changes.

Mario's pizza is only sold by the slice it is square. The crust is very thin and crispy the slice itself can be ordered with all of the typical toppings; however if you order sausage then you get a sausage patty large enough to cover...
