The new Otto Pizza restaurant in South Portland is located across the street from well known Red’s Dairy Freeze ice cream stand. Besides offering the convenient access to both pizza and ice cream, Otto Pizza has much to offer.
Otto Pizza is known for their high quality and innovative pizza offerings. They have taken over an old filling station and brought it back to life, sticking with the pun ‘filling station’. Their décor offers further nods to the filling station theme with a Volkswagen sign above the windows leading into the kitchen and the phrase ‘full service’ written on the wall.
The restaurant has locations in Portland and Massachusetts. The South Portland location offers a variety of slices for lunch from 11:30 to 4PM. $3 for cheese and $3.50 for pepperoni, Margherita or their famous mashed potato, bacon and scallion.
The restaurant is in a neighborhood next to an elementary school and the public library. It is attracting a good family crowd but also offers a decent selection of beer for their older patrons.
In keeping with their innovative pizza offering, they offer several menu selections that do not have the traditional red sauce. For those pizzas that come with a red sauce, it is a tangy, fresh sauce made with Roma tomatoes.
For those who need gluten-free fare, all pizzas except for the three cheese tortellini are available on gluten-free crusts. Some of their unique pizza toppings include butternut squash; ricotta and cranberry; spinach, white bean and roasted garlic; and a meatloaf, mashed potato and herb pie.
