Pizza and Poetry

On April 18th, some pizza restaurants in New Orleans will be delivering a little poetry with their pizza. To honor National Poetry Month, literacy and tutoring center Big Class is working with Pizza Delicious, Mid-City Pizza and Reginelli’s Pizzeria for the event.

Students from age 6 to 18 are writing poetry that will be displayed on the pizza boxes on the night of the 18th. The poetry for the Pizza Poetry Project will cover a variety of topics. Big Class Executive Director Doug Keller says they’ve seen everything from ‘an ode to chocolate by an 8 year old’ to ‘a poem that explores questions of pedagogy from a 16 year old’.

Keller added, “The idea is to showcase the diversity of student voices and what poetry is capable of, and getting it to as wide a readership as possible through the magic of pizza!”

There are also plenty of poems about pizza according to Keller. So far, Big Class has received about 100 poems, their goal is 500. They are still accepting poems on their website.

A portion of the proceeds earned on April 18th will go to support Big Class’ free creative writing programs in New Orleans.
