Pizza Restaurant: The Real Thing: The pizza at Big Fred's is classic Italian pizza: flat crust, ground meat, mozzarella cheese, and cut into squares. That and all the other recipes they use (salad, mostaccioli sauce, etc) are genuine Italian cooking, made from scratch, and as far as I know, haven't changed in the 40+ years they have been there. So you won't get the typical "premanufactured food" so common to other restaurants. You can also order a variety of other items, to accommodate guests with you who might not be in the mood for pizza at the time: mostaccioli rigati, rigatoni, spaghetti, garlic bread, several specialty sandwiches, meatballs, etc.
I've met many many people over the years who have many different opinions about the pizza. A fair amount of people have to get used to it before they like it; some people don't like it; but by far, there are a lot of people who will tell you that the more they eat it, they just can't get enough of it.
It's difficult to describe the restaurant itself. It's not impersonal like a chain restaurant (because it's not). It's definitely not your "hole-in-the-wall" where you happen to discover the best food on earth. It's got a "sports bar" ambience since Fred's into sports- see the picture of him (wall to your left) making a score in golf, right along with all the other sports greats- and they do have a bar in the middle of the restaurant. The lighting is kind of low. They have several TV screens. It seems to be just fine to take the family to, yet at the same time you can take a date there with some class, go on a business luncheon, or even go there with your buddies for a night of fun on the town and meet other like-minded people.
Bottom line is, whoever you're with and whatever you want to get out of a pizza restaurant, you won't be disappointed.
It's easy to find and in a nice part of town. I suppose since you're reading this you're travelling; another plus to considering Big Fred's is that if on another night you decide on steak, Brother Sebastian's, also on the Top Restaurant List, is just about on the other side of the parking lot.
